Our Services A - Z - Orthopaedic Therapy Service
About the service
The Orthopaedic Therapy Team provides a 7 day service for adult and paediatric orthopaedic patients across both sites. Patients are assessed by the team within 24 hours of referral and a treatment plan is put in place which will facilitate a safe and timely discharge. The therapy team aim to involve both the patient and their family in all decisions regarding their treatment and plans for discharge.
Patients requiring a longer period of rehab can be referred to an intermediate care facility in their own locality. Some patients can be discharged home with the support of a social services package of care and some patients can be discharged home with a referral to an outpatient or outreach therapy team to support their continued rehabilitation.
Planned / elective procedures such as hip and knee replacements and many foot and ankle procedures are seen and assessed by the therapy prior to admission. (Joint School and Foot School) These patients attend a pre-operative assessment and education session at St Helens Hospital. The aim of these sessions is to ensure the patient is fully informed, has realistic expectations and has time to prepare, and the therapy team has time to order and get any equipment that will be essential for safe discharge in place prior to discharge.
The Outreach team provides therapy input within the patient’s own home to ensure recovery continues after they leave hospital.
The team supports the development of physiotherapy and occupational therapy students from several universities. All team members are committed to continuing their own professional development via in-service training and external training.
All staff undertake regular mandatory training to ensure safe practice.

This sheet has been designed to help you remember the exercises that you have been taught by your therapist. All of the exercises should be done slowly and smoothly. If you feel any pain, stop and tell your therapist or doctor. The following exercises have been identified by your therapist to further enhance your progression and rehabilitation following your total hip replacement. Some of these exercises may replace certain exercises taught to you earlier on following surgery. Your therapist will advise which of these exercises you should be continuing with.
