Prior to the advent of STHK as the Lead Employer for HEE NW (Mersey & Cheshire) there were six Lead Employers which inevitably led to huge inconsistencies, inequality of treatment, lack of continuous management and support, a wastage of valuable NHS resources etc. The purpose of moving to one Lead Employer was to ensure that all Trainees were treated in a fair and equitable manner, to develop the services, and to ensure that significant financial savings were made through economies of scale and efficiencies. Therefore in 2010 St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust were awarded the Lead Employer contract for Trainees from HEE NW (Mersey & Cheshire).
The Trust promptly established a fully operational Lead Employer model and we are now seen both regionally and nationally as the Lead Employer model that delivers on service developments with the benefits now being seen across the wider health economy. These have enhanced the employment service to the Trainees, enabled HEE (Mersey & Cheshire) to provide greater educational support to Trainees earlier and added value for Host Organisations/Sponsoring Organisations.
In 2015 we also reached an agreement with HEE to provide the Lead Employer service for the country's first employed status Student Physician Associates (SPA's) across the whole of the North West.
