Our Wards - Whiston Hospital - Ward 4A - Urology and General Surgery
Ward 4A is a 32 bedded surgical ward of which 16 are cubicles, specialising in Urology and General Surgery. We also, at times care for patients with other surgical conditions, orthopaedic and medical problems.
On 4A we adopt a team nursing approach to patient care, this style enables patients to receive continuity in care and allows you to build up a relationship and trust for the nursing staff caring for you.
The nursing staff work closely with other members of the multi-disciplinary team including nurse specialists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and the pain team. Utilising these other members ensures that patients and relatives on 4A receive the highest possible standard of care.
The nursing team on 4A are highly skilled, friendly and dedicated to providing high quality care to patients and families.

- Personal Belongings
We only have a limited amount of storage space, so please try not to bring too many things with you. It is not advisable to bring valuables or large sums of money into hospital as we cannot be held liable for any loss or damage to your valuables.
- Meals and Drinks
The ward assistant will provide hot drinks at meal times (0730, 1200 and 1700) and also mid-morning, mid-afternoon and pre bed.
- Special Diets
If you are on a special diet or therapeutic diet, the ward staff will contact our hospital dietician to arrange this for you. The dietician will also be available Monday-Friday to provide specialist information regarding your diet.
The Hospital has a no smoking policy, which includes the wards (further information). Please switch off any mobile phones within the Hospital.
- Discharge from the Ward
Medications: If you require medications to take home with you, these will be given to you by the ward staff before you leave. Please don't leave without them. It can take a few hours for the Hospital Pharmacy to prepare your medications, so bear this in mind when you arrange a time to leave.
Outpatient appointments: You will be told if an appointment has already been made for you or whether it will follow on in the post.
Transport: Please try to arrange your own transport home from the Hospital. Hospital transport is only available for patients who cannot as a result of their clinical condition use other forms of transport
- Suggestions, comments or complaints
We aim to make your stay with us as pleasant and comfortable as possible, and strive to provide the highest quality of care. If you or your family have any suggestions or comments, please discuss them with the ward manager or nurse in charge, or you can discuss them (or any complaints) with the Patient Advice and Liaison Service.
