The Equality Delivery System (EDS) was formally launched in November 2011 and was designed to support NHS Trusts to deliver better outcomes for patients and communities and better working environments for staff, which are "personal, fair and diverse".
The EDS is a tool, which is used in partnership with patients, the public, staff and staff-side organisations, to review the Trust's equality performance and to identify equality objectives and actions. It offers both local and national reporting and accountability mechanisms.
The EDS has 18 outcomes against 4 goals, it is against these outcomes that performance is analysed, graded and action determined.
The EDS was refreshed and streamlined in November 2013 (EDS2). The revised version is simpler to use and it encourages local adaptation with a focus on local issues and problems.
