‘Hospital Staff Making A Difference’: The Breast Reconstruction Team
Lisa Hurworth said: “Words can not describe how glad I am that I chose to have my breast reconstruction surgery at Whiston Hospital. I could not have picked a better team, they saved my life.”
Following extensive treatment for breast cancer Lisa had reconstructive surgery at Whiston Hospital using an innovative technique, which takes tissue from the stomach to create a new breast. Lisa underwent a 16 hour operation to create a new breast, but whilst operating Mr Ken Graham, Consultant Plastic Surgeon found a tumour on Lisa’s rib and removed tissue, which later tested positive for cancer.
“If Mr Graham had not carried out this operation and found these new cancers, I could have died within 3 years,’ said Lisa. ‘Mr Graham saved my life, he is an absolute angel. Both he and Tina Gallagher, Breast Reconstruction Nurse Specialist have supported me throughout my treatment and rehabilitation. Their fantastic rapport helped to put me at ease and gave me complete trust and confidence in their expert care.”
Lisa is currently in remission following her second round of treatment for cancer and is extremely pleased with the results of her reconstruction. She said: “The reconstruction that Mr Graham has created is simply a work of art. Throughout recovery the staff who cared for me were so impressed with his work and were really excited for me. I would recommend this type of reconstruction and the team at Whiston Hospital to any woman. They will make you a whole woman again!”
Ken Graham, Consultant Plastic Surgeon said: “Everyone who has been involved in the Lisa’s care is delighted with how well she has recovered from both the cancer treatment and the reconstructive surgery. We have pioneered this type of surgery known as ‘DIEP Flap’ in the North West and can use tissue from the stomach or the buttocks to create a new breast for women who have undergone surgery for breast cancer.”
