St Helens and Knowsley Teaching HospitalsNHS Trust

GP Trainees

Before now, GP trainees were employed by Warrington & Halton Hospitals NHS Trust whilst they were on rotation in a hospital based placement. Upon rotation to a GP practice placement each practice employed the trainees directly. This often led to confusion with regards to calculating entitlements such as sickness, maternity and adoption leave.

In July of this year the Mersey Deanery, NHS Northwest and St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust agreed that GP trainees and practices would benefit from having one employer for the duration of their training. The North Western Deanery has had this arrangement for some time with North Lancashire PCT undertaking the role of lead employer, so we know that this model works.

All GP trainees working in GP practice placements should by now have received a letter confirming that on 1 December 2010 their employment will be transferred to the Trust. All doctors will retain their current contracts of employment and any contractual policies that form part of the contract.

We need you to complete a new starter form to ensure that we can put you on to the payroll accurately. We will be sending these forms out to you shortly using the e-mail address you have put on the personal details form that you should have already completed.

If you cannot supply us with a P45 from your practice before 4 December then to ensure that you do not get taxed at the emergency rate in the Christmas payroll you will need to complete a form P46. You can download the form at

We will be asking GP practices for information about each trainee in connection with their employment and making arrangements to obtain personnel files.

We will shortly be holding some communication events designed to share our ideas of how the lead employer service will work for practices on a day to day basis, clarifying roles and responsibilities in relation to trainees and answering any questions that you may have.

We will keep this page updated with further information when we have it.
