Maternity is located in Ward 2E on Level 2 in the Purple Zone

Maternity Services are provided by St Helens & Knowsley Hospitals NHS Trust at Whiston Hospital in a purpose built unit and throughout the community of St Helens & Knowsley Boroughs. The service has seen a year on year increase ( 3.5 - 7 % ) in the number of women choosing to have their baby at Whiston.

The Maternity Service has achieved CNST level 2 and has a comprehensive risk management process in place led by a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist and a Risk Management Midwife

Maternity services provide:-

  • Antenatal care for the high risk woman within the hospital and for low risk women this is provided predominantly within the community setting.
  • 16 bedded antenatal ward for those women requiring an inpatient stay
  • Intra-partum care within a Delivery Suite of 8 fully equipped delivery rooms, inclusive of a birthing pool and home birth is provided by the community midwifery teams.
  • Postnatal care within the hospital in a 28 bedded ward and the community
  • Feto-maternal assessment unit
  • Dedicated maternity theatre
  • Bereavement Suite - Specialist Midwife providing initial and on going support for parents who suffer the loss of a baby.
  • Comprehensive antenatal screening programme in accordance with the National Programme
  • External Cephalic Version service for breech presentations
  • Prenatal diagnostic service - amniocentesis
  • Multidisciplinary Diabetic Management in pregnancy and delivery
  • Specialist Midwifery Services - Substance misuse, young parents clinics - hospital and community, bereavement, breastfeeding (working towards baby friendly initiative), risk management, audit & research.
  • Community Services include routine Maternity Care, home birth, parentcraft, aquanatal, aerobics, young person clinics, smoking support.
  • Other sessions held - parentcraft, home birth support group, breastfeeding drop in sessions, weekly unit tours, physiotherapy

We have a strong professional relationship and excellent teamwork with the Neonatal Unit which is located outside the Delivery Suite and the Maternity Theatre.
