Rheumatology Awards Section

NOMINATIONS from patients have helped the Trust’s Rheumatology team to be named national Healthcare Champions.

The award from the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS) is in recognition of the excellent support and care they provide to people living with the condition.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a painful disease, usually affecting joints, which can cause severe disability and shorten life expectancy by around 6-10 years. There are around 400,000 sufferers in the UK.

Consultant Rheumatologist Rikki Abernethy and Clinical Manager of the Unit, Anne Campbell, accepted the award at the Houses of Parliament from the Rt. Hon Theresa May MP, NRAS Patron and Shadow Leader of the House of Commons on 9th June.

The team was nominated by a patient of 26 years, Janice Mather of Kendal, Cumbria.

Janice said: “I have had nothing but the best treatment, care and support from the whole team. They all go out of their way to make me feel special. I cannot thank the team enough as they gave me my life back!”

Chief Executive, Ann Marr, said: “This award is a great tribute to the skill, commitment and compassion of our Rheumatology team. They provide crucial support and a high standard of care for patients living with the condition.”
