Navigating Services
St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals offer new out-patient appointments through Choose and Book for most specialties. Many specialist and general clinics are published in the Choose and Book directory. A full list of the services available on Choose and Book can be found by accessing the hyperlink below

Services can be found by clinic type or by using the snomed search facility on Choose and Book. All listed services have snomed codes associated with conditions treated and are derived from the national snomed codes approved through the national coding system.

When using the snomed search facility on Choose and Book and typing in, for example 'hypertension' the correct service will be made available to offer as a choice to your patient.
One stop services and the majority of out-patient services are provided at our state-of-the-art facilities at St Helens Hospital.

Some specialties have clinics running on both Whiston and St Helens hospital sites. When offering your patients choice, it is advisable to select both locations as a choice to give greater flexibility of appointment availability.

Named Clinicians
Many general clinics operate ‘pooled’ services; this helps us to offer a wider choice of hospital appointments. We know this assists patients in booking an appointment on a day, date and time which is suitable for them. If new referral letters could be addressed to the service or specialty rather than a named clinician this would assist further, unless there are specific clinical issues which would affect your patient’s continuity of care.

Suggested Investigations
Please ensure that any suggested investigations listed in the Directory of Service are completed and the results attached to any referrals.

Exclusions
To ensure your patient is treated in the appropriate service, please ensure that you have read the exclusion criteria for the service before making a referral.

Attachment of Referral Letters
It is very important that referral letters are attached as quickly as possible as some patients are able to obtain appointments within a matter of days, but will not be able to be seen in clinic without a referral letter. The hospital cannot see the booking until a referral letter is attached in Choose and Book. Please attach the referral letter and any supporting correspondence to allow sufficient time for the consultant to review the referral and for any confirmation letters to be sent to the patient.

If you experience any problems finding a service, booking an appointment or have any suggestions for improvements, please let us know.
