About Us

​​The Eye Clinic at the Trust is a modern purpose-built unit providing up-to-date diagnostic and treatment facilities.

Ophthalmology involves the care of eye conditions in patients of all ages. The Trust has a highly trained and dedicated team of specialist ophthalmologists who have expertise in a wide variety of eye conditions.

The Eye Clinic provides the following services: 

  • Ophthalmic Outpatient Department
  • Consultant and nurse-led clinics
  • Orthoptic sessions
  • Nurse-led triage service

Orthoptic Department

The Orthoptic Department is an integral part of the Ophthalmology Service, offering diagnostic and treatment clinics for patients with ocular motility problems and amblyopia (lazy eye).

The department is based at St Helens Hospital providing clinics for both adults and children.

Children's eye clinics are also provided at clinics and health centres located within St Helens and Knowsley areas.

Clinics provided within the community setting include:

  • Pre-school visual screening
  • Orthoptic diagnostic and treatment sessions

Patients are eligible for free NHS treatment at St Helens and Knowsley Teaching hospitals NHS Trust if they are: Ordinarily resident in the UK or: Overseas visitors, but entitled to free NHS services under the National Health Service (Charges to Overseas Visitors) Regulations
