St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the leading acute Trusts in the North West of England. The Trust occupies two new state-of-the-art PFI hospitals, with the new Whiston Hospital having opened in April 2010 as well as Newton Hospital which has recently been integrated into the Trust's service. Whiston Hospital is the main site within this large, high-performing acute trust covering a large suburban area between Liverpool and Warrington, including St Helens, Prescot and Huyton. St. Helen hospital provides a diagnostic and clinic based services along with rehabilitation services with Newton providing a rehabilitation service. We manage in the region of 800 beds across all sites, are accredited with teaching hospital status, and provide for most major specialities with a Major Trauma Unit and the Mersey Regional Burns Unit.
The Pharmacy Department operates a 7 day service to the Trust provides a wide range of services to ensure safe, effective, timely, economical supply and use of medicines. Services are provided by about 120 staff made up from pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy assistants. We have departments at both Whiston and St Helens Hospitals. Both departments have automated dispensing & storage systems. The Trust is in the process of implementing JAC electronic prescribing which pharmacy staff are closely involved with.
